IWPR Holds Meetings Regarding Conflicts And Minorities

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – The Institute of War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) holds a round table with participation of journalists and NGOs acting in autonomous republic Adjara in Batumi today.

 

Prime-News was told at the IWPR, that participants of the meeting would discuss issues of highlighting problems related to conflicts and ethnic minorities.

The round table is held within frameworks of the project “Media of south Caucasus for deepening of trust in the society and prevention of conflicts”. The abovementioned project is implemented with the financial support of the GCPP.

IWPR is a British media organization based in London; its Caucasian Bureau is situated in Tbilisi. Regional bureaus of the organization are situated in 23 countries.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – The 40th anniversary of the Ethnographic Museum is celebrated in Tbilisi on October 12-13.

 

Prime-News was told at Tbilisi City Hall that a jubilee session would be opened at auditorium of the National Museum of Georgia.

Prime-News was told at the Ministry of environment protection and natural resources of Georgia that representatives of diplomatic corps: Ambassadors of Turkey, Poland, Estonia, OSCE mission to Georgia and tour operators would participate in the tour.

Aim of the tour is popularization of the park, attraction of foreign diplomats and tourist companies and other partners for cooperation in tourism sphere.

Prime-News was told at the “Youth Alternative” that narrow circle of students is managing funds of the University.

According to them, it is revealed that GEL 200 000, allocated for students’ self-government had been improperly spent.

The organization appeals to corresponding structures to pay attention to the situation.

 

Some Districts Of Tbilisi Not To Be Supplied With Electricity

Prime-News was told at electricity distributing Company “Telasi” about that.

According to the Company, Vake district: Chavchavadze Avenue (partially), Gamsakhurdia Avenue (partially), Paliashvili, Mtskheta, Atheni, Barnov and nearby streets will not be supplied with electricity from 11:00 till 15:00 on October 11.

Electricity will not be supplied to Matatsminda district: Rustaveli Avenue (partially), Laghidze, Athoneli, Tabukashvili and nearby streets from 10:00 till 17:00 on Thursday.

Electricity will not be also supplied to Chughureti district: Aghmashenebeli (partially), Tsinamdzghvrishvili, Chitaia, Javakhishvili and nearby streets from 10:00 till 17:00 on Thursday.

Tbilisi. October 11 (Prime-News) – The Orthodox Church of Georgia is preparing for celebration of the 140th anniversary of establishment of Djvari Monastery and the 30th anniversary of enthronement of the Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II.

 

Prime-News was told at the Patriarchy of Georgia that these celebrations would be held throughout Georgia.

The celebration is dated to Svetistskhovloba on October 14. Representatives of Orthodox Churches will visit Georgia on October 12-16.

The guests will attend conference dedicated to Svetistskhoveli monastery and celebrations regarding anniversary of enthronement of the Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II.

Tbilisi. October 11 (Prime-News) – Davit Chantladze, Minister of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia, will visit Racha-Lechkhumi and Svaneti region on Thursday, where together with Otar Siradze, President’s Envoy, will hold meetings with local population.

 

Prime-News was told at the Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia that the minister would get acquainted with the problems related to forestry sector on spot and would inform the population with new conditions of wood provision.

Davit Chantladze will inspect the provision of the population with wood as well as organizations financed from the state budget.

The Minister of Environment Protection and Natural Resources of Georgia will meet with owners of licenses of Sochi cones and local population employed in the aforementioned sector in the village Tlughi.

Tbilisi. October 11 (Prime-News) – 52 deaf refugees living in Zugdidi will be granted hearing aids on Thursday.

 

The project is implemented by the Ministry of Labour, Public Health and Social Affairs of the autonomous republic Abkhazia, Union of deaf people of Georgia and a group of Swedish doctors.

According to Dalila Khorava, Minister of Labour, Public Health and Social Affairs of the autonomous republic Abkhazia, the hearing aids have been produced by the Swedish party and granted to Georgia.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Star of Georgian actress Sophiko Chiaureli will be opened in front of Kote Marjanishvili State Teatre on October 17.

 

Prime-News was told at Kote Marjanishvili State Theater that a jubilee evening dedicated to the actress would be held on stage of the Theater before the opening ceremony. Representatives of Georgian theatre, cinema and culture will attend the event.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – A new school was built in the village Didi Djikhaishi in Samtredia region in a result of cooperation between the private business and the state.

 

The school is built by a Construction Company “Module”.

Prime-News was told ay the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia that the new school, which has 200 pupils, was allocated school inventory and computers within the frameworks of the program “Iakob Gogebashvili”.

Alexander Lomaia, Minister of Education and Science of Georgia will open the school on Friday.

The minister will meet teachers of local schools.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Judges will undergo training on regional and universal documents in human rights protection in Bakuriani Hotel “Viktoria” on October 12-14.

 

Prime-News was told at the UNDP that Tea Kasradze, coordinator of the program “Support of court reform”, would open the event.

Aim of the training is to enhance skills and professional level of judges, harmonization of local legislature with the international documents on human rights protection and introduction of precedent of European court in Georgia.

The training is held within the frameworks of the project “Support of court system”, implemented by the Supreme Court of Georgia and the UNDP.

Participants of the training are judges of different instances from different regions.

MIA: Fire First Was Opened From House Of Wanted Meskhidze

Tbilisi. October 02 (Prime-News) – Shota Khizanishvili, Head of the Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, stated that the fire was opened from the house of wanted Meskhidze when the law enforcement bodies appeared near their house.

 

Shota Khizanishvili told journalists that Oleg Meskhidze wanted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia opened the fire from automatic gunfire.

The special operation carried out by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia in Laituri settlement of Ozurgeti region on Monday ended with the fatal outcome.The law enforcement bodies had liquidated 26-year old O. Meskhidze wanted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.

Three policemen were heavily injured in the fire exchange. Murman Tsidava, Malkhaz Tsetskhladze and Vakhtang Tavartkiladze were hospitalized to Kutaisi immediately. The father of liquidated O. Meskhidze had been detained.

Vano Merabishvili, Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia, has arrived in the region due to the incident.

Tbilisi. October 02 (Prime-News) – The representatives of the former Academy of Sports and Physical Education organized a rally demanding the annulment of the regulation issued by the government of Georgia on July 11.

 

Representatives of various political and public organizations joined the rally organized by the lectures and students of the former Academy of Sports and Physical Education. MP Kakha Kukava, Jondi Baghaturia, the leader of “Kartuli Dasi”, and representatives of various NGOs expressed their support towards the participants of the rally.

Kakha Kukava has initiated the discussion of the issue related to the legality of the unification of Ilia Chavchavadze State University and Academy of Sports and Physical Education at the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Science, Culture and Sports. The aforementioned issue will be discussed at the Parliamentary Committee for Education, Science, Culture and Sports on Thursday.

Vladimir Sanakoev, leader of the movement stated that number of members of the movement increases along with the number of offices.

According to him, separatist regime of Eduard Kokoity is afraid of the movement.

Sanakoev noted that the actions will bring result very soon and Kokoity will leave the territory of Georgia.

Tbilisi. October 06 (Prime-News) – According to the information of the Non-Governmental Organization “Human Rights Center”, the law enforcement bodies plan to detain participants of the rally organized in Gurjaani.

 

Prime-News was told at the NGO “Human Rights Center” that they were told at Gurjaani Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia that the rally organized at Noneshvili Street in Gurjaani at 2 o’clock on Saturday was not authorized and violated public order.

According to their information, power supply was restricted to Dedoplitskaro as well as to some other regions of Kakheti in order to hinder the participation of the local population in the rally.

Representatives of “Human Rights Center” have verified the information and revealed that the governor of Gurjaani municipality, deputy governors and the employees of Gurjaani municipality warned the population to refrain form the participation in the rally.

About 100 police officers have been mobilized in Gurjaani.

Tbilisi. October 06 (Prime-News) – The two-day seminar for the employees of the NAPR territorial registration offices of the Kvemo Kartli and Kakheti has been opened in Telavi today.

 

Prime-News was told at the Ministry of Justice of Georgia that the participants of the seminar would get acquainted with how to deal with registration documentations and issue related to land cadastre, technological and legislation innovations.

The seminar is organized within the framework “Training and Management Support Project” implemented by Sweden International Development Agency.

Prime-News was told at the Ministry of justice of Georgia that the CRA dedicated the research to the date. According to the Civil Registry Agency of the Ministry of Justice, there are 555 women named Tekla 16 or elder.

The study became available since the single e-database of citizens was designed in the CRA.

All 16 years old citizens of Georgia are obliged to receive ID Cards. The document is free of charge on the 10th day of submission of an application to the territorial offices of the Civil Registry Agency.

Three Citizens Of Russia And Citizen Of Armenia

Tbilisi. October 01 (Prime-News) – Georgian Border Guards have detained three citizens of the Russian Federation and a citizen of Armenia at the “Sarpi” checkpoint of the Border Police Batumi Office.

 

Prime-News was told at the border Police that during the passport control the border guards discovered that the Russian suspects had several times crossed the State Border of Georgia illegally, without official border control – from “Nizhniy Zaramag” and “Adler”.  The Armenian Suspect was trying to cross the State Border of Georgia on another person’s passport.

The case is under investigation.

Tbilisi. October 01 (Prime-News) – Employees of the Revenue Service at the Ministry of Finance of Georgia seized documents from the customs terminal “Opiza”.

 

Prime-News was told at the administration of the terminal, that the work of the terminal continues in general regime.

Representatives of the terminal do not concrete reasons of the checking.

According to them, the terminal does not receive new loads but old ones are being registered.

Students Held Action Of Protest In Sport Complex “Karishkhala”

Tbilisi. October 01 (Prime-News) – Students of the former Sports Academy held a protest action regarding unsuitable conditions for study in sport complex “Karishkhala” on Monday.

Tbilisi. October 01 (Prime-News) – Attorney Eka Beselia, submitted appeal to the “Association of Attorneys” against Maka Tsartsidze, public attorney of Irakli Okruashvili, leader of the party “Movement for United Georgia”.

 

Beselia told Prime-News that she would appeal against “unethical bekhaviour” of Maka Tsartsidze, namely that she had not informed defense of Irakli Okruashvili and Okruashvili himself about her appointment as his public attorney and attended hearing on preferring charges.

Beselia evaluates appointment of the public attorney to Irakli Okruashvili as illegal and states that the attorney had no right to attend the hearing as Okruashvili expressed distrust to her. Beselia also notes that the court could have made a decision on sentencing Okruashvili to two months of pre-trial detention without presence of the defense.

Beselia informed that the defense would appeal to the Strasbourg court regarding abolishment of the sentence on two months of pre-trial detention.

Zurab Noghaideli, Prime Minister of Georgia, stated that Georgia’s entering the list of the abovementioned countries means that the country is improving business environment annually.

Gela Bezhuashvili To Pay Working Visit To Kingdom Of Netherlands

Tbilisi. October 16 (Prime-News) – Gela Bezhuashvili, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, will pay a working visit to the Kingdom of the Netherlands on October 17-18.

Prime-News was told at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia that the meetings would be held with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Maxime Verhagen, Minister of Defense Eimert van Middlekoop, Vice-presidents of the Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Development Cooperation, Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives  and committee members. Mr. Bezhuashvili will also meet with representatives of the local and international mass media sources.

At the Clingendael Institute of International Relations, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Gela Bezhuashvili will deliver a speech titled ‘Europe without Dividing Lines – Georgia’s Challenges and Opportunities’.

In the framework of Minister Bezhuashvili’s visit to the Hague, a reception will be held on the occasion of official opening of the Embassy of Georgia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“Not only Russian market but also the market of the European Union are closed for the Georgian wine,” noted Kukava.

“The Georgian wine is locked in Georgia and it is not only the problem of the Ministry of Agriculture of Georgia, but the problem of the wrong policy of the government of Georgia,” stated Kukava.

The incident started when the Patrol Police ordered the participants of the rally to free the road and to walk on the pavement. Several devotees refused to obey the instruction of the police and blocked the movement of patrol police cars.

Opposition has been mobilized in front of the building of the Parliament of Georgia and plans to hold a rally near the building of Tbilisi City Court.

Maia Nadiradze declared about that after the meeting of inter-factional group held on Tuesday, where the issues related to the vintage 2007 were discussed.

According to her, in comparison to the previous year the harvest of grapes has been doubled this year. “The most part of the grapes has been already processed,” noted Nadiradze.

Nadiradze remarked that the fact that the peasants failed to receive GEL 0,70 for a kilo of grapes like the previous year was preconditioned by a bountiful harvest of grapes.

October 16 (Prime-News) – The General Conference of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) opened its 34th session in Paris, 16 October 2007 that will be attended by the Georgian delegation led by Minister of Foreign Affairs Gela Bezhuashvili – President of the Georgian National Commission for UNESCO.

Prime-News was told at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia that the General Conference is UNESCO’s main governing body that meets every two years and involves delegations of all member states. The agenda of the 34thsession of the General Conference envisages adopting budget and work program for 2007-2008, as well as conducting elections in UNESCO’s Executive Board and other governing bodies.

On the sidelines of the General Conference there will also function educational, cultural, scientific, communications and information, administrative and other commissions, Ministerial Round Table of Education and Science, Forum of Civil Society.

On 19 October the Head of the Georgian delegation Gela Bezhuashvili will address the plenary session of the General Conference and participate in the general policy debates.  The Georgian side will pose the issue of ensuring protection of the cultural heritage in Georgia’s conflict zones.

The same day, on behalf of the Georgian Foreign Minister, a reception will be held at Le Palais de la Monnaie de Parisdisplaying a Georgian archeological exhibition ‘L’or de la Toison’.

Mamuka Katsitadze stated at the press conference organized on Tuesday that the presidential program of subsidies is tied with the low political rating of Georgian president and the ruling party “United National Movement”.

According to Mamuka Katsitadze, it was unfair to give one-time assistance to the people, who were put to this kind of state by the acting government of Georgia.

Mamuka Katsitadze appealed to the population of Georgia to accept the vouchers issued by the government of Georgia and reminded people that it was the money that the government of Georgia has been stealing to the population of Georgia since 2005.

In comparison to previous year the budget of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia has been decreased with GEL 348 334 500.

Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security has discussed and approved the aforementioned issue today.

Papuna Petriashvili, Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia, stated at the session of Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security that it was planned to introduce amendments into the initial draft budget in November. Relatively the budget of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia will be increased from GEL 922 million up to GEL 100 million.

According to the statement of Vera Dzneladze, Deputy Minister of Defense of Georgia, the main part of the allocated money will be spent on increase of salaries to servicemen.

Vera Dzneladze stated that the budget of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia envisages the construction of a new military base in Khoni and improvement of defense system of the country.

State expenditure will be GEL 4.6 billion and revenues – GEL 4.3 billion in 2008, according to the initial draft budget submitted to Parliament for consideration.

Baramidze And Bezhuashvili To Attend 8th Session Of EU And Georgia Cooperation Council

Tbilisi. October 16 (Prime-News) – Giorgi Baramidze, State Minister of Georgia on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Vice Prime Minister, and Gela Baramidze, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, together with their Azeri and Armenian colleagues will be meeting with Supreme Representative of the European Union on Overall Security and Foreign Policy Javier Solana and Euro-Commissioner on Foreign Affairs and European Neighborhood Policy Ms. Benita Ferrero Valdner in Luxemburg on Tuesday.

Prime-News was told at the Administration of State Ministry on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration that regional issues, relations with Russia and issues of conflict resolution in the region would be discussed at the meeting.

An annual European Union and Georgia Cooperation Council 8th Session will be held on October 16, in Luxemburg. State Minister of Georgia on European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Vice Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Baramidze and Minister of Foreign Affairs Gela Bezhuashvili will attend.

During the Cooperation Council session they will review European Neighbor Policy Action Plan Implementation, on-going reforms in country, Rule of Law, Human Rights Protection and Internal Conflict Resolution problems.

During the Cooperation Council session the sides will also review EU and Georgia’s cooperation on issues of Law, Freedom and Security, and specifically about foundation of the Legal, Freedom and Security sub-committee, under which the migration and visa issues could be discussed and decisions made. At the Cooperation Council session Georgian side will once again raise the questions of simplified visa regime among Georgia and the European Union and read mission agreements.

Tbilisi. October 16 (Prime-News) – Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia, positively evaluates the resolution on the situation in Abkhazia, Georgia adopted by the UN Security Council.
The President of Georgia told journalists that the document for the first time recognizes property rights of the Internally Displaced Persons from Abkhazia.

“The next step towards the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict that the UN has to make is to recognize ethnic cleansing in Abkhazia. We have to work on the aforementioned issue,” admitted the President of Georgia.

According to Mikheil Saakashvili, due to Tbilisi principled position the resolution does not say anything about the Georgian state-funded youth patriotic camp located in Ganmukhuri.

The UN Security Council has adopted its sequential resolution on the situation in Abkhazia, Georgia and extended mandate of the of the UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) for a new period terminating on April 15 2008.

The UNSC reaffirms the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders. In this context, the UNSC expresses its support for the principles contained in the so-called “Boden document” that imply distribution of competencies between Tbilisi and Sokhumi within the Georgian State.

At the same time, it is notable that the UNSC calls upon the parties for further increase their bilateral contacts by making full use of all existing mechanisms in order to come to a peaceful settlement, including the safe and dignified return of refugees and internally displaced persons. 

Irakli Alasania, Permanent Representative of Georgia to United Nations, evaluates the resolution on the situation in Abkhazia, Georgia adopted by the UN Security Council as balanced.

Irakli Alasania stated at the press conference held at the UN that the resolution reflected all the important issues voiced by the Georgian side among them are IDPs’ fundamental right to return and their right of property.

According to the information of Irakli Alasania, the majority of the members of the UN Security Council support the proposal voiced by the President of Georgia to review the entire peace process in Abkhazia.

Irakli Alasania also admitted that Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary General, supported the aforementioned idea.

Vitaly Churkin, Ambassador of the Russian Fedration to the UN, estimated the document as “a good resolution”.

“We are contented with the content of the above-mentioned resolution. We deem that the resolution is sending right messages to the Georgian side,” stated Churkin “The aforementioned resolution fully corresponds to the policy of Russia aimed at the stabilization of the situation.”

“For example the resolution emphasizes the importance of close and effective cooperation between UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) and the Russian peacekeepers as they currently play an important stabilizing role in the conflict zone,” noted Churkin.

“The UNSC stresses the need for a perspective of life in security and dignity for IDPs and refugees in Abkhazia, Georgia, in particular for a new generation growing up outside the region. It reaffirms fundamentally the right of return for the refugees/IDPs to their homes and property in Abkhazia, Georgia,” declare at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

It should be particularly mentioned that, due to efforts of the full majority of Group of Friends, for the first time the UNSC resolution contains provisions according to which individual property rights may not be affected by the fact that owners had to flee during the conflict and the residency rights and the identity of those owners must be respected.

The UNSC expressed its serious concern over the incident that took place Abkhazia, Georgia on 11 March and 20 September 2007. In this regard, it is noteworthy that the Council once again called on Abkhazian side to exercise restraint in connection with the Georgian commitments with regard to Upper Abkhazia.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Georgia reaffirms its readiness to continue cooperation with the UNOMIG and with representatives of the UN Secretary General’s Group of Friends in this regard, and supports the settlement of conflicts only by peaceful means. In order to reach this goal, the Georgian side reiterates its readiness to conduct, without any preconditions, direct bilateral negotiations with the Abkhazian side.

“The Georgian side’s position is that the UNSC has adopted a well-balanced document which adequately reflects the current situation in Abkhazia, Georgia and the basic principles for the peaceful settlement of the conflict – territorial integrity of Georgia and the return of IDPs and refugees in safety and dignity. Resolution reflects all issue put forward by Georgian side namely by the President of Georgia, Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Minister for conflict resolution in their consultations at the UN,” reads the statement disseminated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

 

Along with the resolution, UNSC consultations encompassed discussions on issue of Comprehensive Review of Settlement Process in Abkhazia, Georgia. Majority of council members shared the initiative presented by President of Georgia in September at the UN General Assembly General Debate, which later was detailed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in his follow up meetings with the UN officials.

“Equality Institute” Accuses Saakashvili Of Applying Double Standards

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – According to information of the “Equality Institute” Temur Alasania, uncle of Georgian president, allocated investment to the territory of Azerbaijan occupied by Armenian separatists and purchased mines.

 

Levan Gogichaishvili, member of the “Equality Institute”, stated about thta at the press conference today and accused Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia, of applying double standards.

According to him, relatives of the president do thing for which the president criticizes other people.

The matter concerns investments allocated by “Geo Pro Mining” Company to the abovementioned territory, which is of a particular interest Temur Alasania.

“The territory belongs to Azerbaijan. At the same time Saakashvili criticizes Russia for allocating investments to Abkhazia,” stated he.

According to him, “Geo Pro Minisng” is Georgian company, however, it is backed by Russian “Industrial group”, owned by Alasania’s friend sergey Generalov.

Tbilisi. October 15 (Prime-News) – Kakha Kukava, member of the “Conservative” party states that the fact that the ruling “National Movement” allows its offices for issuing vouchers of the presidential subsiding as deliberate gaining over the population.

 

Kukava stated at the Bureau session today that this action from the “National Movement” is inadmissible, as they persuade the population in propriety of their policy.

Maia Nadiradze, leader of the parliamentary majority, stated regarding the fact that the “National Movement” expressed readiness to assist the government in issuing vouchers with its infrastructure.

Tbilisi. October 15 (Prime-News) – Nino Burjanadze, Chairwoman of Georgian Parliament, met with members of the House of Commons of British Parliament today.
Nika Rurua, Vice Chairman of the parliamentary committee on security and defense, stated after the meeting that the parties discussed the NATO-Georgia relations.

According to him, after Georgia members of the House of Commons of British Parliament will visit Turkey.

Tbilisi. October 15 (Prime-News) – The UN Security Council today will adopt a resolution in which right of property of IDPs will be highlighted.

David Bakradze, State Minister of Georgia for conflict resolution, stated at the press conference today that the UN would openly state its attitude towards fundamental rights of IDPs in Georgia and their property.

“Return of IDPs and right of property are priority issues for us in this resolution,” Bakradze stated.

According to him, the resolution also includes such positive elements such as restoration of political dialogue between the sides and necessity of revision of the peacekeeping process.

Bakradze also noted that the incident of September 20 that occurred in Upper Abkhazia is not evaluated in the resolution; it was fixed only as fact.

Tbilisi. October 15 (Prime-News) – Nino Burjanadze, Chairwoman of Georgian Parliament, states that the resolution on Abkhazia, which will be adopted by the UN Security Council today, includes some imported points.

Burjanadze told journalists that no international document has been adopted considering only one side.

According to her, the abovementioned resolution includes points that were not included in any previous resolution.

Tbilisi. October 15 (Prime-News) – Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia, invited Vladimir Putin, president of the Russian federation to vintage in Kakheti region.

 

Saakashvili stated about that at the concert dedicated to wine festival held in Telavi today.

According to him, Georgia has record harvest of vine this year.

Kirkitadze Rejects Advices Of Badri Patarkatsishvili

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – MP Davit Kirkitadze, member of the ruling party, ignores advises of businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili.

 

Kirkitadze urges Patarkatsishvili to answer the questions regarding the high-profile murders of Listev and Litvinenko.

“Patarkatsishvili should better give answers on the questions put regarding the murder of Litvinenko, Listyev and others in Russia. I have not asked for advice from him. Irakli Okruashvili’s activities have demonstrated what kind of advice he can give,” Kirkitadze told journalists today.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – According to Nika Rurua, Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary committee on security and defense, the NATO Parliamentary Assembly expressed unprecedented support to Georgia.

 

Rurua stated at the plenary session today that the Assembly adopted two resolutions, which concern Georgian-Russian relations and support of Georgia’s integration into the NATO.

According to him, in the resolution on the Georgian-Russian elections, the Assembly called on the Russian side to implement reasonable actions regarding supply of energy resources and fulfill international obligations.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – The Parliament of Georgia approved candidature of Levan Tarkhnishvili as Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia (CEC) with 135 votes unanimously at the plenary session today.

 

Tarkhnishvili told journalists that during his work on the position he would work on improvement of voter’s lists and improvement of qualification of specialists.

Opposition lawmakers, who were against the candidacy, did not participate in the voting. According to them, Tarkhnishvili, who is believed to have close links with the ruling party, would fail to generate public trust because of his affiliation with the ruling party.

The Parliament has also approved David Kirtadze as member of CEC with 132 votes.

Position of Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia (CEC) became vacant after Guram Chalagashvili was appointed Chairman of GNERC.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – The Parliament of Georgia approved two new Ambassadors of Georgia at the plenary session today.

 

The Parliament approved Merab Antadze, Deputy Foreign Minister, as the Georgian ambassador to Ukraine, replacing Grigol Katamadze with 131 votes.

The Parliament also approved Konstantine Korkelia, Deputy Justice Minister, as Georgian Ambassador to Latvia, with 129 votes.

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Mikheil Saakashvili, president of Georgia, spoke about relations between Georgia and Russia, and peaceful resolution of conflicts during the meeting organized by the Paasikivi Society in Finland.

 

“Georgia is now faced with a great challenge. Our relations with Russia are very important. Tbilisi does not want opposition and confrontation in its relations with Moscow. We want to create and maintain guarantees for our own security,” Saakashvili stated.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Finnish political circles, foreign diplomats accredited in Finland, experts and political scientists and journalists from politically oriented publications.

“I am glad to be in Finland today. We were greeted by people in the street waving Georgian flags. This is very pleasing to me. In addition to the fact that we were warmly received, we understand each other very well. The Finnish people understand well the challenge that Georgia faces and are standing by us,” the president said.

At the end of the meeting, Saakashvili was awarded a special medal.

 

“Labourists” Protest Against Appointment Of Tarkhnishvili As Chairman Of CEC

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – The “Labour” party of Georgia protests against appointment of Levan Tarkhnishvili as Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia and states that he would assist falsification of elections “for the second time”.
Giorgi Gugava, political secretary of the party, stated at the press conference on Friday that Tarkhnishvili is working in one of the Funds sponsored by Soros.

“We call on EU, European Commission, not to support Tarkhnishvili’s candidature,” stated Gugava.

The Parliament of Georgia will vote on candidature of Levan Tarkhnishvili as Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia today.

Burjanadze Participated In Assembly Of IPU

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Nino Burjanadze, Chairwoman of Georgian Parliament, and Georgian parliamentary delegation participated in the 117th Assembly of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva on October 07-12.

Prime-News was told at the Parliament of Georgia that Burjanadze delivered a speech at the Assembly.She spoke about importance of the Black Sea region on contemporary geopolitical map.

Chairwoman of Georgian Parliament also spoke about priorities of Georgia and noted that they are ensuring of inevitability of democratic reforms and strengthening of state institutions.

Within frameworks of the visit, Burjanadze held meeting with the president of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Within frameworks of the visit, Gocha Martinenko, Head of the Parliament’s Administration and Secretary General of the South Korean Parliament signed a memorandum on cooperation between Parliaments of the both countries.

UN Published Interim Report On September 20 Incident

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – UNOMIG published its interim report on the September 20 incident in Kodori Gorge.

The document, posted on the official website reads that the incident occurred in 300 meters from the administrative border of the Abkhazian side. Several Abkhazians were injured during the incident and two Russian officers, who were working at de facto border guard department, were killed.

According to the report, the sides have different versions regarding the fact.

“We cannot confirm or deny version of the Georgian side at the moment,” reads the report.

The UN expresses gratitude to the government of Georgia and de facto regime for cooperation.

According to information of the Georgia side, the attack occurred on the territory of Upper Abkhazia controlled by the Georgian side. A group of saboteurs planned some diversions on the abovementioned territory.

Debates On Initiative Of Catholicos-Patriarch Of All Georgia To Be Held At Parliament Of Georgia On October 25

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Debates on the initiative of Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II, which considers restoration of constitutional monarchy in the country, will be held at the Parliament of Georgia on October 25.

 

Pikria Chikhradze, member of the parliamentary faction “Right Opposition”, stated at the plenary session today that it would be better to hold the debates with the attendance of Nino Burjanadze, Chairwoman of Georgian Parliament.

Catholicos-Patriarch of all Georgia Ilia II reckons that constitutional monarchy is one of the alternatives for the structure of state. The Patriarch said during his Sunday Preachment on October 07 that the people of Georgia were to decide what kind of state they want to live in.

Zurabishvili Left Of Two-Week Tour For Europe

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Salome Zurabishvili, leader of the party “Way of Georgia” left on a two-week tour for Europe today. Zurabishvili will visit Germany, France and Belgium.

Prime-News was told at the press service of the party “Way of Georgia” that in Germany Salome Zurabishvili would participate in debates “development of global democracy” on the local Television.

Salome Zurabishvili intends to hold official meetings at the Foreign Ministry of Germany.

Zurabishvili will leave Germany for France, where she will deliver a course of lectures on foreign relations at the Paris Institute of Political Science. She will presumably meet with Nicolas Sarkozy, president of France.

Zurabishvili will hold meeting with Javier Solana, High representative of foreign policy and security of the EU, in Brussels.

United Opposition To Meet Population Of Samtskhe-Javakheti Region

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – The united opposition will meet with the population of Samtskhe-Javakheti region today.

 

After meeting the population of Gori, Khashuri and Borjomi, representatives of the “United People’s Movement” will hold a rally in Alkhaltsikhe.

The opposition will call on the population to participate in the rally in front of the Parliament of Georgia scheduled for November 02.

“We promised the people to visit almost all regions of the country,” stated Tina Khidasheli, one of the leaders of the “Republican” party.

The united opposition intends to hold a rally “Georgia without president” in front of the Parliament of Georgia on November 02 with the demand to hold special elections.

Chairman Of CEC To Be Elected At Parliament Of Georgia On Friday

Tbilisi. October 12 (Prime-News) – Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia (CEC) will be elected at the Parliament of Georgia on Friday.

 

Levan Tarkhnishvili, the member of the Supervisory Board of the Georgian Public Broadcasting, has been nominated on the post of the Chairman of the Central Election Commission. The most part of parliamentary ruling majority supports his candidature, however the opposition disapproves the candidature of Levan Tarkhnishvili on the post of Chairman of Central Election Commission. The opposition considers that Levan Tarkhnishvili is the cadre of the acting government of Georgia and he will not be able to be impartial and independent.

The post of the Chairman of CEC became vacant after Guram Chalagashvili was appointed as the Chairman of the Georgian National Energy Regulation Commission.

Bokeria Evaluates Talks About Restriction Of Freedom Of Speech As Absurd

Tbilisi. October 11 (Prime-News) – Giga Bokeria, one of the leaders of parliamentary ruling majority, has responded to the statement made by Badri Patarkatsishvili on Wednesday and evaluated the hysteria related to the restriction of freedom of speech and freedom of expression as absurd.

Giga Bokeria stated at the press conference held on Thursday that the government of Georgia permanently criticizes the opposition, however it has no reaction, but the opposition became very irritated when the authorities started to criticize Badri Patarkatsishvili.

Bokeria noted that the opposition parties now needed to unite under the banner of so called fight for freedom of speech in order to fill the vacuum created after the failure of the Okruashvili’s case.

According to the MP, Patarkatsishvili’s made a daring and respectful move when he took decision to return to Georgia, however he ought to give some explanations about his past activities.

The MP has also responded to the rally scheduled on November 02 and noted that the opposition is also free to rally anytime they want.
